Workshop Information
Ana M Gomez has developed several advanced workshop for EMDR Clinicians working with children and adolescents.
The workshop "Step by Step: Making EMDR Treatment Effective and Developmentally Appropriate for Children and Adolescents" focuses on specific strategies that will assist clinicians in following the EMDR principles and procedures while meeting the developmental needs of children and adolescents. Clinicians will learn how to make EMDR treatment successful and effective even with difficult clients. This workshop has 18 video clips that explain step by step each phase of the EMDR protocol. Participants attending this workshop will be able to:
- Develop case conceptualization skills and treatment plans based on the Adaptive Information Processing model(AIP).
- Use effective strategies to work with caregivers in all phases of the protocol.
- Identify key factors when establishing the client's readiness for EMDR treatment.
- Effectivelly prepare children and adolescents for EMDR treatment. This includes resources for stabilization and affect regulation as well as the use of RDI (Resource development and Instalation) and PAT (Positive Affect Tolerance) to strenghten the parent-child bond.
- Identify targets using developmentally appropriate floatback and mapping strategies.
- Use story-telling, narrative and play therapy techniques as well as sand tray strategies with dissociative, avoidant and resistant children and adolescents.
- Use different types of cognitive interweaves that are more suitable for children and teenagers.
- Use "The Skill Building Phase" and EMDR Games to effectively administer the standard EMDR protocol with children and adolescents.
The second two-day advanced workshop "Complex Trauma, Attachment and Dissociative Symtoms: Treating Children with Pervasive Emotion Dysregulation Using EMDR and Adjunctive Approaches" provides theoretical and practical strategies to assist clinicians working with children with severe dysregulation of the affective system such as: Children exhibiting insecure patterns of attachment, complex PTSD and dissociative symptoms. How to use EMDR, attachment theory and adjunct approaches such as ego state therapy and somatic intervention with children is addressed. Strategies directed to titrate amount of trauma and keep children within manageable and tolerable levels of activation to facilitate reprocessing is demonstrated. In addition, participants will be able to use strategies to help caregivers become efficient external psychobiological regulators of the child’s system to foster the development of self-regulation.
Participants attending this seminar will be able to:
- Use strategies for EMDR case conceptualization and treatment plan development with children with complex trauma using the AIP model.
- Use effective resources for stabilization and affect regulation that are suitable for children.
- Utilize EMDR, attachment theory and adjunct approaches such as ego state therapy and somatic intervention with children to facilitate the reprocessing of traumatic material.
- Clinicians working with children with severe deficits in affect regulation face the challenge of having these children become extremely aroused or dissociated during trauma reprocessing. These two responses (hyperarousal and hypoarousal) can interfere with the child’s ability to integrate traumatic material. Participants attending this seminar will learn strategies to keep children within manageable levels of arousal and maximize the child’s ability to reprocess traumatic material.
- Utilize cognitive interweaves effectively with highly dysregulated children.
- Use strategies to help caregivers become efficient external psychobiological regulators of the child’s system.
- Learn how to work with caregivers during the desensitization phase so caregivers are able to provide under the guidance of the clinician effective and powerful cognitive interweaves.
Additional workshops:
• Beyond PTSD: Using EMDR to Treat Depression in Children and Adolescents.
In order to take this advanced workshops, clinicians need to have the basic EMDR training.
